Why do the Abbotts wait, while the Zimmermans rush...
The first letter of our childhood surname determines much about our consumer behavior as grownups, according to a new study in the Journal of Consumer Research.
Why are some people more likely than others to wait in line overnight to buy a just-released book or to queue up for the new iPad? “The tendency to act quickly to acquire items such as those above is related to the first letter of...

The secret of the Roush effect - Seth Godin
The secret of the Roush effect
When Gerald Roush died in late May, he left behind the Ferrari Market Letter. This newsletter, which he started and ran, had nearly 5,000 subscribers, paying him $130 a year for a subscription. Do the math! It’s a good living—even without a fancy website.
The newsletter, it appears, was not just lucrative, it was a bargain. It chronicled the pricing,...

One reason why Plato thinks our society is...
Maleesa had a great thought after Philosophy class, as we were walking back and discussing Plato’s belief in the Natural Division of Labor (the belief that everyone should work at what they are good at, and become very skilled in one field or craft).

Home - The School of Life →
The school of life is one of Alain de Botton’s current projects. He is known for his contemporary literature that takes high-brow topics, and applies it to everyday living. Proust, architecture, and love are a few of his recent topics.
The school of life takes that concept, and challenges current curriculum in it’s application to everyday happy living. The classes are in “How...

I wonder how facebook affects my mental social...
With these improved news feeds, I only see a select number up status updates, so then I am generally thinking about these people whose updates I see. What about the people that I don’t see on my newsfeed? How is my perception of them changed in my mind?
How do parties change the older you get?
Parties for college-aged people are about meeting people who can provide them with sex. Parties for middle-aged people are about meeting people who can provide them with business opportunities. Parties for old people are pure parties.
( Just a thought. I know many (most, I hope) of us (myself included) party for reasons other than sex. )
Obama as Spock?
¶ ¶ WASHINGTON (AP) _ He shows a fascination with science, an all-too deliberate decision-making demeanor, an adherence to logic and some pretty, ahem, prominent ears. ¶ They all add up to a quite logical conclusion, at least for “Star Trek” fans: Barack Obama is Washington’s Mr. Spock, the chief science officer for the ship of state. ¶ “I guess it’s somewhat...

Should everything be designed like Apple and Google?
Our two biggest web friends are not that unique, this minimalist movement has been growing for decades. I think the novelty of the internet has worn off, and we need to think in consistent, practical terms. It’s an exciting time to be an e-junkie, as we are making leaps and bounds in internet democracy. A few engineers are able to run an...
